My local leather group has asked me to give a presentation on the spiritual aspects of D/s, so I am turning to you folk and asking if some of you would be kind enough to add further insights. For me there are marked parallels between my relationship and submission to my Master, and my relationship and submission to my Gods. This is one of the things that attracted me so strongly to the D/s lifestyle in the first place. I am interested in how you came to perceive connections and parallels between D/s and spirituality, and how your spiritual journey influences and informs your D/s journey, and vice versa. Thanks very much for your input. I appreciate it. :-)Similar request also posted to living_d_s
My mate teriel and I have a different approach. We come more from a magical perspective, and so what's most important for us are the altered states of consciousness (ASC) inherent to a scene that can also be used for magical purposes. We're also switches, so trade off on the roles within pathworking. For example, we've used scenes numerous times as ways to explore and deal with internal issues. The ASC gets us beyond the usual headspace of everyday consciousness, and past all the "This is wrong", or "I don't want to think about it". The bottom's defenses are stripped away, and s/he's "forced" to look at those unpleasant realities. S/he can then bring back the realizations s/he's gained from the experience and apply them to everyday living. We've had great success with this sort of journeying. Granted, it's not for everyone, and it's certainly not 101-level magic. You REALLY have to know yourself AND your partner(s) well, especially once you go picking around the psyche. We generally decide upon a general "topic" to cover beforehand, though we know each other well enough to be able to trust the other to find a good way of broaching the subject. We know how far is too far for both (though we also use safe words/actions) and know each other well enough to be able to "read" the other person. We also do practical magic. A common example is drawing a sigil that represents a particular magical desire and placing it someplace where the bottom can see it, adn then charging the sigil through the pain and ASC the bottom experiences, as well as the top directing the bottom's energy toward it. If you're curious, you can find out more here. Or just ask :)
Yes indeed, your articles are going to be very helpful. I really appreciate the things you're making available to the community -- and I'm sure looking forward to reading your 'Kink Magic' book. :-) The switch thing interests me very much in this context. It's fairly easy to figure how submitting to a Dom/me plays the same chords in one's soul as submitting to a deity, and how taking on the responsibilities of a Master or Mistress can make you reconceive your concepts of God, in that in so many ways you become a god to your slave. Being able to switch and see it from both sides must add a very special perspective.
Part of the reason we switch is so that we both know what it's like to be on the other side, so to speak. There's only so much you can know about an experience from secondhand information, and because we both know both sides of the equation pretty well we have a better understanding of what the other person is going through adn may need. Granted, you can learn a lot about both topping and bottoming even if you never switch, but in our experience, at least, being able to take either role has enriched our understanding of both, both in a kinky and a magical sense.
I am Wiccan and from my faith, all acts of love and pleasure are Her rituals and all acts of willing sacrifice are His, so I see the Lady and her Lord consort in all that we do. I hope that is helpful, but I would be happy to elaborate if you wish.
That's beautifully phrased. :-) I've long suspected that Gerald Gardner must have been into BDSM and understood the kind of dynamic he was building into Wicca...
